Mark Finsterer was born in Bowral and taught himself to play the guitar at the age of fifteen. After leaving school he worked as a guitar teacher and performer before enrolling in the Bachelor of Music in Composition course at the NSW State Conservatorium of Music.
Graduating in 1986, Finsterer spent the next two years teaching guitar privately and lecturing in Composition and Australian Music Studies at the Conservatorium. In 1988 he travelled to Italy to study composition with Franco Donatoni at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, where he was awarded a Merit Scholarship and obtained the Accademia's Diploma.
Finsterer returned to Australia in 1990 and moved to Wagga Wagga, where he formed the Wagga Guitar Duo with Roger Pell, with the aim of performing contemporary music for two guitars.
Mark Finsterer's compositions include Strange Coin for bass clarinet and percussion, and the guitar piece Katharos, which has been published in the Currency Press anthology, Australian Guitar Solos.
