Winner of the 2011 Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year (Australian Jazz Bell Awards) and the 2011 Jazz Work of the Year (APRA/AMC Art Music Awards), Johannes Luebbers has emerged as one of Australia's most interesting young jazz composers. Graduating from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 2006, Johannes studied arranging with Graeme Lyall, piano with Graham Wood and Tom O'Halloran and was awarded the Bob Wylie Scholarship for the most outstanding graduate. Throughout his short career he has been the recipient of numerous other awards including the 2009 Youth Arts West Australian Citizen of the Year, 2009 Best Australian Jazz Composition of the Year (Bell Awards), 2008 Jazz Song of the Year (WA Music Industry Awards) and the 2006 APRA Professional Development Award for jazz. He has also release two albums with his own award winning ensemble, the Johannes Luebbers Dectet (JLD).
For the past three years Luebbers has focused on collaborative projects, which have resulted in a series of EPs with drummer Daniel Susnjar and guitarist Simon Jeans, the scoring of the documentary It's Not Just Me (with composer Alice Humphries), the inter-disciplinary Winery Psalms (with choreographer Lucinda Coleman, visual artist Sue Starcken and musician Shoeb Ahmad), and several other projects.
In addition to his work with the JLD, Johannes has written music for the Tasmanian Symphony (with Kate Miller-Heidke and Missy Higgins), Orchestra Victoria (with Sinead O'Connor and Dan Sultan), the WA Symphony Orchestra (the Panics and Jay Laga'aia), the Australian Rock Symphony (with the Baby Animals and the Divinyls), the Logie Awards, Mark Vincent (2009 Australia's Got Talent winner), the WA Youth Orchestra, the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra and Decibel new music ensemble. In 2013 he also worked on orchestrations for the new production of Shane Warne the Musical. He has also performed his original work at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival, the York Jazz Festival and was a featured performer at the 2011 APRA/AMC Art Music Awards. Johannes is also the composer for the new music theatre production Melba, which premieres at the Hayes Theatre in 2017.
From 2007-2014 Johannes taught at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), lecturing in jazz arranging, aural, composition and ensemble. In 2015 he joined the ANU School of Music in Canberra and in 2016 accepted an offer at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, at Monash University in Melbourne. In addition to his teaching work Johannes is currently a PhD candidate at WAAPA, researching in jazz, collaboration and composition. He was also president of the Perth Jazz Society from 2011-14, a panel member for the Australian Council for the Arts from 2011-14, an Associate Artist with the Australian Music Centre and is co-founder of the independent new music label Listen/Hear Collective.
