Caitlin Rowley (b. 1973, Sydney) is an experimental composer,
artist and performer based in the UK. Her work often addresses
questions of memory, visual/auditory disconnect and the
boundaries between private and public compositional spaces. She
works in a range of media, including conventionally notated music
for instruments and voices, text scores, video, mixed media and
art prints. Her compositions often combine multiple media in a
single work (such as her experimental song cycle for tenor and
piano
Crossing Dartmoor) or use unique art objects as
scores (Fortune Favours the Brave for flute and objects,
or Community of Objects for four performers).
Rowley's work has been performed and exhibited internationally in
venues including Kings Place, the Barbican, Brisbane Powerhouse,
Southbank Centre, Flood House Chicago, the Royal Academy of Arts,
Morley Gallery and 44AD Artspace, and at festivals in Australia,
Norway and the UK. Performers have included Topology, pianist
Jeanell Carrigan, Plus-Minus Ensemble and noted British soprano
Jane Manning. Her music has been broadcast nationally in
Australia and the UK.
Rowley studied composition at the University of Sydney with Peter
Sculthorpe and Eric Gross for her Bachelor of Music degree, and
screen composition with Jan Preston at the Australian Film
Television and Radio School. She obtained her Master's degree in
Composition (MFA Creative Practice (Music)) from Trinity Laban
Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, where her teachers
and mentors included Errollyn Wallen MBE, Paul Newland, Stephen
Montague, Dominic Murcott and Sam Hayden. After graduating from
Trinity Laban with Distinction in 2014, she attended classes in
Sound Art, Field Recording and Soundscape Composition at Morley
College London. She also holds a Graduate Diploma in Design (with
Distinction) from University of Technology, Sydney. Since 2016
she has been engaged in part-time doctoral research in
interdisciplinary composition at Bath Spa University under the
supervision of composer James Saunders and artist Robert
Luzar.
Rowley writes about her research work, the creative process and
the role of fear in creativity on her blog, and since 2017 she
has produced a regular video blog
about her composition process, revealing her working process
through updates on current work in progress.
Caitlin Rowley works freelance as a composer, performer, producer
and teacher. She is a resident composer-performer with the
acclaimed London collective Bastard Assignments.
