Nathan Wilson was born in Gilgandra, New South Wales in 1976. He studied composition at the University of Western Sydney graduating with First Class Honours in 1998 and completed a PhD in composition at the University of Sydney in 2004 under the supervision of composer Kirsty Beilharz. His composition teachers have included Michael Whiticker, Dr Jim Franklin, Ian Shanahan and Professor Anne Boyd.
Wilson's compositions are musical interpretations of the concepts that arise out of the consideration of natural and creative phenomena such as literature, visual art, astronomy, biology, chemistry and technology. In order to suggest contexts for the organisation of musical elements, two or more (usually opposing) concepts, objects or images are juxtaposed and their consideration leads to the development of harmony, timbre, rhythm, texture and overall formal structure. Aspects of serialism, number, chaos theory and pitch and rhythmic procedures are all to be found in Wilson's compositions.
Wilson's music has been performed in Australia, Eastern Europe, Germany
and the United States. In 2002 The Rille of Cauchy from Wilson's piano
cycle HeartBroken Glass In The Sea Of Tranquility (2002) was joint
winner of the Composers' and Musicologists' Union of Moldova Ars Poetica
Composition Competition and in 2004 his solo harp composition The Banister
for a Mockingbird's
Sky (2004) won the Harp Society of New South Wales inaugural composition
competition. This piece was subsequently performed in 2006 by Australian harpist
Alice Giles
at the American Harp Society's 37th National Conference in San Francisco.
Alice Giles also gave the Australian premiere of The Banister for A Mockingbird's
Sky at Sydney's Government House in 2006.
