Australian music on ABC Classic FM in July 2009

In July on ABC Classic FM, New Music Up Late features three contrasting composer/sound artist guests presenting musical selections to match, while across the network, competition and festival concerts include an array of new and old Australian compositions, and In Performance also presents the radio premiere of an epic choral/orchestral work from Richard Mills.

On the web, classic/amp turns in a heritage direction with recordings of music by Helen Gifford and pianist/composers Lindley Evans and Frank Hutchens, while the AMU Podcast continues to bring you the latest sounds with selections from recent performances of Australian music by Melbourne’s energetic Speak Percussion.

New Music Up Late

Tonight we chat to Brisbane-based sound artist and creator of the Room 40 label, Lawrence English, about his work and the music that interests him.

Saturday 18 July 10.30pm – Electrofringe: inside angle
Sound artist and organiser for Electrofringe 2009 Somaya Langley introduces some of the sounds and artists that are interesting her as she plans for this year’s festival.

Saturday 25 July 10.30pm – Off The Record: David Young & Puzzles
Tonight we chat to Melbourne-based composer and Aphids artistic director David Young about his work and influences. The program culminates in the radio premiere of his major recent work Waiting to Turn into Puzzles, created in collaboration with film-maker Louise Curham and featuring the musicians of Ensemble Offspring.

Stephen Adams is a composer of concert music, music theatre and digital music. Since 2004, he has been working full-time at ABC Classic FM in the development of Australian music programming, recording and commissioning projects, and online Australian music presentation. Since 2006, he has been co-producer of CFM’s New Music Up Late program. Recent on-line projects include the AMU podcast, Orpheus Remix Awards, Lute Project and classic/amp.
