Australian music on ABC Classic FM in June 2014

Australian music on ABC Classic FM in June 2014

June opens with a special program on Monday night from Perth's large chamber new music project Etica, focusing on the WA angle with new and recent works from local composers James Ledger and Chris Tonkin plus the reprise of Laikan, a turning-point Ross Edwards work commissioned for and premiered at the 1980 Perth Festival. New Music Up Late the following Saturday features another big program with three premieres from the 2014 Aurora Festival of Living Music in Western Sydney, including an epic concerto for soprano saxophone by Brian Howard, written for New Music Network president and long-time champion of new music in Sydney, James Nightingale.

There's also quite a bit of new and old Australian music in the orchestral programs this month. The TSO play Elena Kats-Chernin's Wild swans suite, the SSO give us a new work by Brett Dean, the MSO play more Dean, and the QSO give us Paul Stanhope's Elegies and Dances. And on the chamber music front there are premieres of new works by Alicia Grant on Sunday Live and by Mark Isaacs from the Southern Cross Soloists.

New Music Up Late also celebrates the winter solstice with Hobart's mid-winter music festival Dark Mofo in a live late-night broadcast from Federation Hall of the TSO playing to midnight for the winter solstice, with music including Brett Dean's classic Carlo. And across the month Julian Day talks to some of Australia's successful expatriate musicians and plays new studio recordings of their work including music by Elena Kats-Chernin, David Young, Damian Barbeler, Cor Fuhler, Anna McMichael, Luke Paulding and Liza Lim.

In webspace the New Waves podcasts continue with more surprises in June. Check out the May series featuring new works for solo percussionist by Thomas Meadowcroft, Anthony Pateras, Liza Lim, Alexander Garsden and James Rushford, performed by Eugene Ughetti. And our latest addition to the Rewind collection, Liza Lim's Ehwaz for trumpet and percussion, written for and performed by ELISION's Tristram Williams and Peter Neville. Enjoy.
