Australian music on ABC Classic FM in June 2015

Australian music on ABC Classic FM in June 2015

(Update/edit 26 June: Nigel Butterley 'Music Makers' feature, originally scheduled for 27 June, has been postponed. The broadcast date will be confirmed later.)

After the buzz of last month's Canberra International Music Festival and Perth's Totally Huge New Music Festival broadcasts, things look a little quieter on air for Australian music in June.

One notable highlight in the middle of the month is Sydney Chamber Opera's production of Fly Away Peter, a brand-new chamber opera by Elliott Gyger and librettist Pierce Wilcox, based on the David Malouf novella of the same name.

And Ensemble Gombert with a choral program pairing music by Estonia's most famous son, Arvo Pärt, with several pieces by Australian composer Calvin Bowman.

Speaking of Estonia, the first week of June also features a string of late evening segments of music from this year's International Rostrum of Composers, held just recently in Estonia's capital, Tallinn. The segments feature new music from over twenty countries, including this year's winners (from Norway and Slovenia) and our own Australian entries, and will be heard Monday to Saturday (1-6 June) following the 8pm Evening concert.

The New Waves podcast this month takes you to Perth to discover the music of a new generation of emerging composers from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and the University of Western Australia's School of Music. The music and interviews were recorded last month at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art as part of ABC Classic FM's coverage of the 12th Totally Huge New Music Festival.
