Australian music on ABC Classic FM in September 2014
September marks the 80th birthday of one of Australia's grand old figures of new music - composer, pianist, teacher and editor of volumes of Australian piano music from across the 20th century, Larry Sitsky. New Music Up Late on 20 September features a 2-hour conversation and retrospective playlist from this important composer. And the week before we present the world premiere broadcast of his Oboe Sonata, performed by oboist David Nuttall with the composer at the piano.
There are a large number of other premieres across the month, kicking off with a new work from Paul Grabowsky for the Flinders Quartet, and ending with New Music Up Late's broadcast of a whole concert of premieres by Erik Griswold, Vanessa Tomlinson, Kate Neal, Anthony Pateras and Michael Askill, performed by Australia's newest contemporary percussion ensemble, Brisbane's Early Warning System.
ABC Classic FM's six concert broadcasts from the 2nd Bendigo International Festival of Exploratory Music include world premieres by Elliott Gyger, Kate Moore, Cor Fuhler and festival director David Chisholm, heard alongside other Australian compositions and numerous first Australian performances from the international scene.
Sunday Live is also looking good with an all-Australian program from the Australian Voices and percussionist Claire Edwardes from Newcastle, and music for two pianos from Anna Grinberg and Liam Viney in Brisbane, including a world premiere from Andrew Ford. New Music Up Late also presents a concert of new and recent Australian works from the Melbourne Composers' League. And Selby and Friends play a new work by Brett Dean.
Online, the latest addition to the Rewind collection is a 1965 ABC studio recording of Peter Sculthorpe's break-through String Quartet No. 6. And our New Waves podcasts put Brisbane percussionists Early Warning System into your portable mp3 player with the music accompanied by conversation with ensemble members Vanessa Tomlinson and Michael Askill.
