Double Planet - a VCE music resource by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
In 2011, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is partnering with Pingmusic.com.au to set up an online educational resource to support the VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education) Music Study Design for the next five years. Pingmusic.com.au is a social network for music education, providing creative musical opportunities for school students across Victoria.
MSO has commissioned Stuart Greenbaum to write a 15-minute work for small orchestra - his Symphony No. 2 (Double Planet). The work has been recorded and filmed to create an audiovisual performance which will be made available for live streaming and download by Victorian school students and their teachers state-wide. Students and teachers will also be able to watch and listen to composer/performer interviews, access a full compositional analysis of the work, and share thoughts, comments and questions with other students and their peers.
PingMusic.com.au integrates with Noteflight.com, a web application that enables users to compose notated music within the browser, without the need to install notation software on their local computers. Extracts from Stuart Greenbaum's piece and related composition exercises will be provided for students to use as starting points for creating their own compositions.
All online materials will also be supported by live performance
workshops with Stuart Greenbaum and the Melbourne Symphony
Orchestra presenting Symphony No.2 (Double Planet) at
four metropolitan schools across Melbourne in March-April 2011 as
part of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra's 'Up Close and Musical'
The cost of the program is $10 per student (accompanying teachers free - workshop duration 50 minutes). School bookings can be made by calling the MSO Box Office on (03) 9929 9600.
Pingmusic.com.au is a collaboration between The Song Room, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Victorian Opera, Country Education Project, 3MBS FM, and is funded by the Victorian Government, The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, and various other trusts and foundations.
The resources will be available at PingMusic.com.au/doubleplanet from 18 March 2011.
