The first issue of the arts journal Extempore, launched during the Wangaratta Jazz Festival, is available from a number of bookshops nationwide as well as online. Extempore is a bi-annual arts journal with a special focus on jazz and improvised music – or, as the new magazine itself puts it, a journal 'celebrating the creativity that surrounds jazz and improvised music'.
Journal's managing editor and publisher Miriam Zolin is a writer and novelist known for her passion for jazz. The first issue of the new magazine is a rich compilation of interviews, essays, reviews, fiction and poetry. The interviews include conversations with Sandy Evans, Paul Grabowsky, Aaron Flower, Shannon Barnett and Tony Gorman. Extempore also includes the winning entries of the 2008 National Jazz Writing Competition – another one of Zolin's jazz-related initiatives. In 2008, the theme of the competition was short story, and the resulting stories by Peter Newall (1st prize) Matthew Asprey and Spike Mason are all printed in their entirety.
Extempore invites contributions by writers both established and new, poets, photographers and artists. The second issue of the journal is scheduled to come out in May, with interviews with Mike Nock and Judy Bailey, among others. The journal comes with a bonus CD.
