Gian Slater awarded Creative Australia Fellowship

Melbourne-based jazz vocalist and composer, Gian Slater, has been awarded one of 6 Creative Australia Fellowships for young and emerging artists by the Australia Council.

Slater, a graduate from the Victorian College of the Arts, has been a finalist in the prestigious Freedman Fellowship, The National Jazz Awards and the Bell Awards for 'Best Jazz Vocal Album'. In 2011 she was awarded the MJFF APRA composers commission. Slater also directs 18-piece vocal group INVENIO.

The fellowship consists of $60,000 over two years, which Slater will use to develop her jazz practice through mentorships with Meredith Monk and Theo Bleckmann in the US, and Paul Grabowsky and Lucy Guerin in Australia. She also plans to use it to develop a new work for INVENIO and dancers, and develop the sustainability of the ensemble.
