Pianist and composer Andrea Keller has been announced as the 2017 Merlyn Myer Music Commission Recipient. Keller will compose a new work for performance by Ensemble Offspring in November 2017. The Myer Music Commission aims at supporting outstanding Australian female composers. It was initiated by the Merlyn Myer Fund and co-developed by the Fund and the Melbourne Recital Centre.
Andrea Keller is dedicated to the performance and creation of contemporary jazz and improvised music. She has led and devised numerous projects and is perhaps best known for her work with the Andrea Keller Quartet. She has also released many albums, including six by the Andrea Keller Quartet, two solo piano albums and two by the Keller/Murphy/Browne trio. The diversity of her approach has placed her on stage with artists and ensembles such as Eddie Perfect, Genevieve Lacey, The Song Company, Black Arm Band, the Australian Art Orchestra, Flinders Quartet, Allan Browne, and others.
Keller's work as a composer traverses styles, and ranges from solo to big band settings, including cross-cultural collaborations, cross-genre collaborations, and the use of electronics. She has received three ARIA Awards, four Australian Jazz 'Bell' Awards, an AMC & APRA Art Music Award, and fellowships from the MCA/Freedman Foundation and the Australia Council.
'Andrea is well known to audiences at the Melbourne Recital Centre as a pianist of considerable talent, and this new opportunity will let us see her in a completely new light', said the Centre's director of artistic planning Marshall McGuire.
