Splinter Orchestra and the NOW Now series
The improvised music ensemble Splinter Orchestra – a unique group of musicians with very diverse backgrounds, performing without a conductor – is now touring. With close to two dozen members on the road, this is not a small operation. You can catch The Splinter Orchestra in Newcastle, Wollongong, Wagga Wagga, Bathurst and Katoomba. The tour finishes in Sydney as part of the NOW Now concert series on October 27th.
The Splinter Orchestra has been closely involved with the NOW now organisation since it was formed by bassist Clayton Thomas in 2003. It has served as an environment for exploratory musicians in Sydney to exchange ideas as well as a breeding ground for other projects. In 2007, the band released its first album on Split Records.
The touring musicians of the Splinter Orchestra are: Jim Denley (woodwinds), Monika Brooks (accordion), Milica Stefanovic (electric bass), Ian Pieterse (baritone saxophone), Alex Masso (percussion/electronics), Peter Farrar (alto saxophone/tape deck), Dale Gorfinkel (vibraphone/homemade motorised instruments), Grant Arthur (bass trumpet/banjo), Sam Dobson (double bass), Abel Cross (acoustic bass guitar), Matt Ottignon (flute/clarinet), Mirabai Peart (violin), Aemon Webb (electronics), Joseph Derrick (trumpet), Ben Byrne (electronics), Karen Booth (alto saxophone), Finn Ryan (percussion), Rory Brown (double bass/percussion), Robbie Avenaim (percussion), Simon Ferenci (trumpet), David Green (percussion/harmonica/miscellaneous), Rivka Schembri (cello) and Daniel Whiting (laptop).
