Women in the Creative Arts - call for submissions

Women in the Creative Arts - call for submissions

[Update 28 Feb: deadline for submissions is 20 March]

The School of Music at the Australian National University has announced a call for papers and submissions for the innovative research conference 'Women in the Creative Arts', to be held at the ANU on 10-12 August 2017. Papers and proposals are invited from scholars and industry practitioners from the creative arts. The topical focus for this conference is the creative work of artists who identify as women. Delegates of all gender identities are invited to submit proposals for papers.

'The role of women in the creative arts is a growing and increasingly visible one. Many women contribute to the development and creation of new artistic works in creative literature, music and the visual and performing arts, often lacking mentorship and networking support systems. This conference will bring together artistic practitioners working as researchers and teachers across Australia and beyond', said composer Natalie Williams, convenor of the conference and lecturer at the ANU School of Music.

Women composers are also invited to submit scores for piano trio (minimum 5 minutes, maximum 8 minutes) for performance consideration. Only works without electronics, instrumental preparation or installations will be considered. Works will be performed by the Muses Trio (violin, cello, piano) at a recital during the conference.

Submissions are also invited for poster presentations, seminar panels, roundtable presentations, networking events, or creative workshops that might be of interest to delegates in this field. Submissions should focus on the work of women in the creative arts: music, performing arts, creative writing, visual arts, from academia and industry.

Confirmed keynote speakers for the Women in the Creative Arts conference are Australian composers Liza Lim and Cat Hope. The conference is intended to provide a spotlight for research professionals to gather, present their methodologies, discuss the unique issues surrounding the creative arena, and propose strategies to enhance and enrich their working lives as strong members of an international cultural and artistic voice.

The conference is supported by the Gender Institute at the Australian National University, the College of Arts and Social Sciences at the Australian National University, the Australia Council and the School of Music, Australian National University.
