Dr Leigh Carriage is an Australia composer, vocalist, author, researcher, educator, public speaker and a Senior Lecture in the Contemporary Music Program at Southern Cross University. Carriage completed research and compositions Ph.D., Doctorate in Philosophy (Composition) at Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Sydney University. In 2022 Carriage was awarded the Australian Women in Music - Humanitarian Award.

Since 2004 Carriage coordinated the APRA AMCOS Songwriters Seminars with artists such as: Nerida Tyson-Chew, Bernard Fanning, Hiatus Kaiyote, The Stiff Gins, Lisa Gerard, Rob Hirst, Kerrianne Cox, Katie Noonan, Troy Cassar-Daly, Neil Murray and Mia Dyson. Australian Songwriters are invited to discuss and perform and discuss their individual and or collaborative approaches to composition/songwriting to a live audience.

Carriage recorded two albums in Sydney at Studio 301, Mandarin Skyline and Get Out of Town featuring Steve Russell, Jonathan Zwartz, Phil Slater, Matt McMahon, Hamish Stuart, Sam Keevers and Matt Smith. Mixed and mastered in LA by Grammy Award winning engineer Helik Hadar. Mandarin Skyline was nominated for a National Bell Award. Carriage's sixth album Weave, features ten original compositions, several pieces written for large ensemble with horn and string sections. 'Weave' won Album of the Year in the North Coast Entertainment Industry Awards.

Festival performances include the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival USA as well as Wangaratta Jazz and Blues, Brisbane Jazz Festival, East Coast Blues and Roots, Woodford Folk Festival, Melbourne International Women's Jazz Festival and regular performances at the Brisbane International Jazz Festival and Brisbane Festival in the famous Spiegeltent.

Carriage has two books of scores published with Wagtail Books, the first is a collection of art-typed songs from the album Mandarin Skyline. In these pages performers will find new repertoire with simple but beautiful piano accompaniments, students of songwriting will find inspiration and edification, and music lovers will find beautiful music to play. The second book of scores from her award-winning album Weave, is set to rich and beautiful piano accompaniments. An important addition to the anthology of Jazz vocal compositions by Australian composers, including detailed transcriptions of some of Carriage's vocal improvisations, ideal for jazz vocalists pursuing new Australian repertoire, secondary and tertiary teachers seeking educational repertoire, or for any musician looking to expand their vocabulary.

Other research interests include composing and arranging, live performance, improvisation, vocal pedagogy. Carriage is a guest each month on ABC National Weekend Evenings with Christine Anu and is a regular contributor to The Conversation.
