John Colborne-Veel was born at Melbourne, Victoria, in 1945, and studied composition as a private student with Dallas Haslam.

A prolific composer, Colborne-Veel wrote orchestral, chamber, choral, operatic, ballet and electronic music as well as scores for the film, television and recording industries. He received acclaim for his religious compositions which include five masses, a liturgical dance suite and numerous incidental pieces.

He was also frequently asked to contribute articles of historical and contemporary interest about music to a number of journals.

John Colborne-Veel represented Australia as Chief Delegate at the 15th Asian Composers' League Conference and Festival held in Seoul, Republic of Korea October 1993, and again at the 16th Conference and Festival in Taipei, Taiwan during May 1994. He was also invited to the 1995 conference, held in Bangkok, Thailand.

Apart from Australian performances, his works have also been played in Japan, United States of America, Germany and Botswana.
