Beginning her life in an orphanage in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo, Nirmali Fenn was raised and educated both in Australia (Universities of New South Wales and Melbourne) and the UK (Oxford University). She has received prizes for her music at the 26th Concorso Internazionale di Composizione in Turin and was a finalist for the 2013 APRA Awards.
Her compositions have impressed many of the world's leading ensembles specialising in contemporary music, including the Arditti Quartet, Ensemble Cairn, Ensemble Linea, Kuss Quartet, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Tin Alley String Quartet, Sounds Underground, Endymion Ensemble and the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble.
Collaboration with performers has been a very important aspect of her writing, and she has been a composer in residence for the Saxophone Habanera Festival in Poitiers, France, and the Lake District Summer Music Festival, UK. Other important collaborations have been in modern dance with the City Contemporary Dance Company, the foremost dance company in Hong Kong, and the Guangdong Modern Dance Company, China. Her collaboration with Asia's most eminent choreographer Pun Siu Fai has toured Singapore, Japan and China, also opening the 9th Guangdong Dance Festival in Guangzhou China.
Nirmali is currently working at New York University and, previous to this, she was a visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong. Her music is published by Edition HH.
