Andrew Howes : Associate Artist

'My aim is to find unity between compositional craft and instrumental technique, to compose music that is in sync with the musician.'

Andrew Howes (b.1992) is a composer, generously supported by Dr Arthur Bridge OAM and Ars Musica Australis, currently studying for his Master's in Composition at the Manhattan School of Music under Professor Susan Botti. Born in Sydney, he attended the Conservatorium High School, before completing his BMus in Composition at the Royal College of Music, London, as an Audio Network Scholar supported by a Clifton Parker Award.

Andrew enjoys working with a wide range of performing media, and his works have been performed by ensembles including Sydney Youth Orchestra's Flagship Orchestra, the Willoughby Symphony, The Song Company, and the Sydney Symphony, and in collaborative projects with the Tasmanian Symphony, Taikoz and the Australian World Orchestra. Notable commissions include those from the Sydney Symphony, Australian Youth Orchestra, the Royal College of Music, Michelle Leonard (Leichhardt Espresso Chorus, Moorambilla Voices), Christina Leonard, and several works for the Sydney Camerata Chamber Orchestra, where Andrew was Composition Fellow for 2011.

In 2015, Andrew was composer in residence for the APRA-award winning Moorambilla Voices' 10th season, having also participated in 2013 and 2016. In June of 2012, Andrew was the recipient of the Fine Music 102.5 Young Composer Award for his work Madrigal 4. He took part in the 2013 Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra's Composers School under Kenneth Young, Andrew Schultz, Maria Grenfell and Paul Stanhope, as well as in the 2010 Symphony Australia Orchestration program, under Richard Mills.

Andrew has also worked as an orchestrator, providing his services for singer-songwriter Josh Pyke and for Louis Mander's opera The Building of Ely Cathedral.

Andrew has studied with Trevor Pearce, Richard Gill OAM, Andrew Schultz, Simon Holt and completed his Bachelor's degree under Professor Alison Kay. He has been mentored by Christopher Seaman, Richard Mills AM and Tim Garland.
