Justin McCoy has been a professional musician all of his working life.

He was a founding member of the successful 1980s classical rock group Hat Trick, and, since the early '90s, has been composing and recording music for film and TV.

In 1998 he won the AGSC award for best music for a children's TV series with the ABC's animated series Petals. Since 1998 he has been composing music and engineering post production audio for Grainger TV, and others. To date he has completed approximately 150 documentaries and TV series, which have aired on the ABC, 7, 9 and 10 networks, and internationally. On ABC1, the high-rating series Travel Oz is currently in its third season.

In 2001 McCoy was commissioned by ABC NewsRadio to compose themes and underscores, and by PMS music for a series of projects. He also freelances as an engineer, e.g. recording the 2008 release of the BBQ Kings CD Fellowship of the Grill (ABC records). He has a well equipped studio, utilising Pro Tools and an extensive suite of the latest software synths and samplers.

With four teenaged children of his own, McCoy has had extensive experience working with children's music. During the '90s he produced several children's CD series for Larrikin Records, including a number based on classic Australian literature, e.g, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, and Blinky Bill. With his wife Bernadette he co-writes and produces a cover CD for the bi-monthly ACP children's magazine Little Friends.

The documentaries he works on sometimes require music with an orchestral influence. This he is able to successfully create from his extensive library of orchestral instruments. He often augments the sampled instruments with real strings, to provide authenticity. Bernadette, a fine violinist, frequently features in these scores, as do his children, who are becoming accomplished musicians and writers themselves.

Justin McCoy has always been a live performer, and is currently performing in the duo Highly Strung with Bernadette, mainly in the corporate and private sector, the McCoy Band with Bernadette and their four children, as well as the occasional Hat Trick reunion.
