THEIR records are making money, their performances are well-attended, and the proponents of new and contemporary music in Australia are on the verge of becoming household names. Or at least lively media creations.

With very little promotion and on shoe-string budgets, the new music industry in Australia, and particularly Melbourne, is booming.

Recorded releases and newly created performance works are being lapped up by a literate and enthusiastic audience that never seems to tire of its often demanding tones.

It is into this enlivened atmosphere that the newly formed Contemporary Music Events Company has flung out its first, occasional program of new music performances. Entitled `Surface to Air', ...
