Event Details
The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra have held a prominent role for many years in the international music scene. It was in 1972 that the BPO cello section performed a radio broadcast of Julius Klengel’s Hymnus for Twelve Cellos, this event becoming the impetus for the founding of an independent cello ensemble.
The exceptional tonal and virtuosic qualities of this ensemble soon took worldwide concert audiences by storm, and now the 12 Cellists enjoy a remarkable international following. Whether they’re playing the classics, jazz, tango or avant-garde, listeners are fascinated by the wide range of unique and intoxicating timbres that these twelve cellos can produce, and their mixture of intensity and humour, strength and lightness, appeals to audiences of all ages.
For their Sydney premiere, they will perform favourites by Fauré, Piazzolla, Morricone, and a work commissioned by the ensemble from award-winning Australian composer, Brett Dean.
This is a unique opportunity for Sydney audiences to experience the supreme skill and artistry of these Berlin Philharmonic string players within the magical surrounds of the Concert Hall. One performance only!
Featured non-Australian music: Fauré, Piazzolla, Morricone
