Event Details

The 2015 Peggy Glanville-Hicks Address, the yearly event organised by the New Music Network, will be presented in Sydney (26 October) and Melbourne (30 October) by Richard Gill OAM on the topic of THE CASE FOR NEW MUSIC:

"Is it necessary to encourage creative individuals in society if their contributions do not seem to benefit mankind in the same ways science and medicine do? Why, in creative endeavours, does new music seem to lag well behind Dance, Drama and the Visual Arts when once Music was in the vanguard of creative endeavour?

What is it about new opera, for example, which would lead the current Artistic Director of the national opera company to suggest that audiences were to blame for not attending new works? Are we to blame and have we brought this circumstance of resistance to it on ourselves? In this address I hope to provide some answers to these questions and possibly encourage more questions. The discussion must be kept alive and not suppressed by arts czars and bureaucrats who think they know better."
