The Chennai Tapes is a collaboration built on the South Indian Carnatic tradition and interpreted by Australia’s leading contemporary jazz players and has toured to the Mysore ashram of His Holiness Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Swamiji, Chennai’s prestigious Indian Academy of Music, the Lalitha Kalathoranam in Hyderabad, and throughout Australia.
The rhythmic intricacies and improvising practices that reside at the core of both the South Indian Carnatic tradition and the Western jazz tradition are revealed in this program of virtuosic splendour. Rich in power, beauty and originality, The Chennai Tapes is new music for South Indian and Western instruments built on the rock solid foundation of the Carnatic tradition.
Four legends of South Indian music, Guru Kaaraikkudi Mani, V. Suresh, B. V. Balasai and U. P. Ragu, join forces with AAO greats, Paul Grabowsky, Adrian Sherriff, Sandy Evans, Lachlan Davidson, Philip Rex and Niko Schäuble, and Paul Williamson in this groundbreaking work.
Don't miss the ensemble's return to the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall with this powerful program.
