Art that allows us to be other than who we are, even for a moment, is invaluable… Mesmerising - Sydney Morning Herald

One of the most distinctive and spellbinding units in improvised music; the Alister Spence Trio has attracted global recognition for their ingenious compositions and magnetic live interplay. Together, they create luminous soundscapes that are dark, lyrical, textured and endlessly surprising. Formed in Sydney more than fifteen years ago this trio brings together three of the most exciting, innovative and experienced musicians in Australia. They have released five CDs on the Rufus Records label (Australia). Their most recent release Far Flung (November 2012) received a 4-star review by Brian Morton in the Jazz Journal, and was listed in Critics Poll for 2013. It was also listed in The WIRE 2013 Rewind Critics' reflections by Andy Hamilton.

The Trio have toured in Europe and Australia. Festival appearances include Vancouver International Jazz Festival, The International Festival de Jazz de Montreal, Vilnius Jazz Festival, Luminous Festival - Sydney Opera House curated by Brian Eno, Tokyo Jazz Festival, Wangaratta Jazz Festival and Melbourne International Jazz Festival. Returning to the Sound Lounge with some brand new compositions and music from Far Flung, don’t miss this captivating Trio as they explore the boundaries between improvisation and composition. Engaging and strongly rhythmic, the music generates excitement.

Performers: Alister Spence (piano/samples), Lloyd Swanton (bass), Toby Hall (drums/glockenspiel)
