Event Details

APQ illuminates intimate chamber music with youthful mastery, insightful musical conversation and impeccable balance. The players' passion for the piano quartet stems from their love of the extraordinary repertoire and the unique qualities of the ensemble itself: a synthesis of the soloistic sonority of a string quartet with the orchestral power of the piano.

This APQ concert is a homage to the centenary of Gallipoli and music of the First World War with the Piano Quartet written by a young Arthur Bliss in 1915 while he was fighting in France. The concert will also include the premiere of a new commission by Sydney composer Andrew Batt-Rawden using the heartbeat of two musicians to create tempo, accentuating the different internal dialogues of the performers, creating spontaneous rhythmic effects. This is followed with Beethoven’s transcription of his own Wind Quintet, considered the ‘sister masterpiece’ to Mozart’s Grand Quintet (concert 1). The recital will conclude with Mendelssohn's electrifying Piano Quartet in B Minor.

Featured non-Australian music: Bliss, Mendelssohn
