In a program crafted by Christina Leonard, the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) investigates works by Mary Finsterer. From the time Mary began her career as a composer in the mid-1980s, her work was distinct from other Australian composers.

Her music has traversed Modernism and Renaissance inspired style, from the concert platform through to music for the screen. Mary’s attitude toward diversity is dedicated to the ensemble and their audience. While her compositional methodology remains the same, the outcome that is the listener’s journey is as unexpected as it is invigorating.

This program showcases a selection of Mary’s music starting with Tract, a wild rollercoaster of a ride. From there it ventures to the poetic lyricism of 'Nobility' from Julian Suite No.1 to the rhythmic and heralding Ionia featuring Soprano Saxophone. The fragility of Angelus shows another facet of Mary’s work, as does the interlocking layers of contrasts in the Renaissance influenced Percussion concerto Silva.

"A journey through this Australian composer's work could be compared to one through a sonic hall of mirrors" - Naomi Johnson.
