Our final program for the year opens with the diversity of drama and dance in St Paul's Suite. Gustav Holst wrote the work in 1912 for St Paul's Girls' School where he was director of music. A new surprise premiere by much loved local composer, Stephen Yates precedes two luscious romantic works with harp. The Elegia by little known yet highly expressive Estonian Heino Eller is coupled with Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus by Vaughan Williams. The year concludes with a work of classic brilliance by one of the true prodigies of the nineteenth century: Felix Mendelssohn. The String Symphony No 7 was one of twelve written between the ages of twelve and fourteen. We finish the year with a splash of rare genius!
Featured non-Australian music: Holst; Heino Eller; Vaughan-Williams; Mendelssohn
