Event Details
The award-winning guitar ensemble, Guitar Trek, pioneered the concept of the "guitar family" in the late 1980s. Using different size "classical" guitars specially designed for them, they were able to replicate the range of the standard string quartet, reinventing the guitar quartet medium. This special festival-opening concert will celebrate the 30th year of Guitar Trek, who's wonderful music-making has been an inspiration for many players and composers both in Australia and abroad, and always entertaining for their large enthusiastic audiences. The dedication and leadership of Timothy Kain has been outstanding and it will be a time of recognition, retrospection and celebration.
The program will feature music from Venezuela, Africa, Europe and Australia, including the world premieres of new works by Richard Charlton and Bradley Kunda written especially for the occasion of Guitar Trek's 30th anniversary. The concert will also include a special tribute to the late, great Phillip Houghton who passed away very recently.
This special event will feature dinner + music, and is the official launch of the inaugural Classical Guitar Festival Sydney.
Featured non-Australian music: Alfonso Montes, Llanura
