‘Sheens is an original composer, one whose melodic and rhythmic ideas championed narrative over virtuosity. Sheens weaves a little minimalist magic.’ All About Jazz
Expatriate Matthew Sheens has made impressive progress after moving to New York just a few years ago and winning a Downbeat Student Award in 2009.
His debut album of originals, Every Eight Seconds, was widely acclaimed and this concert serves as a launch to his new album, Cloud Appreciation Day, which draws on West African grooves to 20th Century poetry, creating an exciting and unique musical experience.
Matthew is returning with Adelaide bassist Lyndon Gray, drummer Tim Firth, vocalist/songwriter Gian Slater and guitarist Hugh Stuckey.
The album was made possible by the APRA/ AMCOS Professional Development Awards.
Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre and Matthew Sheens.
