I Heard a Byrd Sing - A flight of fancy from Byrd to The Byrds
Musical Director – Sally Whitwell
“Early as I me walked upon a May morning, I heard a Byrd sing.” Thus wrote composer Thomas Morley, a student of William Byrd‘s and the inspiration for this musical flight of fancy. From Stephen Leek‘s Black Swan to Lennon and McCartney‘s BlackBird, from Johnny Mercer‘s Skylarks to Agnes Obel‘s Sparrows, from Regina Spektor‘s Two Birds to Sally Whitwell‘s A Hundred Thousand Birds, this tribute to our feathered friends culminates in the most melodious bird of all, William Byrd, and a pinnacle of polyphony, his Mass for Five Voices.
Featured non-Australian music: Byrd, Lennon & McCartney et al.
