Roper River sweeps through the Northern Territory, from Mataranka to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Along the way, it passes the remote town of Ngukurr and in the wet season, the Roper engulfs all but Ngukurr’s highest land. As the waters recede, a natural land bridge appears – the Roper Bar – allowing people to cross to the town.
Crossing Roper Bar is an ongoing collaboration between the Australian Art Orchestra and Young Wagilak Group of South East Arnhem Land, celebrating country, ceremony and the reconciliatory possibilities of music. Led by world-renowned music man Paul Grabowsky AO, the project blends the musical heritage of Australia’s first folk with contemporary composition and improvisation.
