Event Details

The son of legendary saxophonist George (Big George) Coleman Sr and organist Gloria Coleman, George Coleman was just seven when jazz innovator and master drummer Max Roach gave him his first set of drums. George went on to study under influential masters including Jamil Nasser and Billy Higgins, the latter calling him 'one of the most talented and creative drummers on the New York jazz scene'.

George has worked and recorded with such notable jazz masters and young lions as Harold Mabern, Benny Powell, Jamil Nasser, Sir Roland Hanna, Don Braden, Benny Green and of course George and Gloria Coleman. Along with friend and brilliant musician/composer Ned Otter, George co-founded Essential Arts Concepts, Inc., a non-profit corporation dedicated to expanding public awareness of jazz and increasing the performing and recording opportunities for jazz artists.

Dale Barlow and Coleman Jr came together in the late 80’s, and have been playing together on and off, ever since, establishing the groove and rapport of long time collaborators. They have recorded an album in Melbourne, Treat Me Gently and performed extensively in the USA, Asia and Australia. Capturing a sound that is exciting and inspired with a high level of musicianship, this Quartet encompasses swing, authenticity, original tunes and classic standards, such as Amsterdam After Dark (by George Coleman and The End of A Love Affair, which is played with bebop abandon.

Over two nights, these two jazz legends are joined by a young local rhythm section to give you the chance to hear this wonderful music live in the intimacy of the Sound Lounge.
