Event Details

Topology launches its seventh album Difference Engine, and delightful Brisbane soprano Emma Baker-Spink joins the band to celebrate Brisbane in song. Topology’s saxophonist John Babbage may just be related to the inventor of the computer, Charles Babbage, whose “special” personality prevented his mechanical computers being completed was vindicated when his 1820s designs (“Difference Engines”) were made into working devices in 1989 by the London Science Museum. John Babbage has made music from the idea of these mechanical computers, using notes and rhythms in place of gears and wheels, and it’s featured on Topology’s new CD, which will be launched at this event. The other focus of the concert is a collection of songs centred on Brisbane, featuring vocalist Emma Baker-Spink. Songs with words by Brisbane poets, reinterpretations of classic Brisbane bands the Go-Betweens, the Saints and even the Bee Gees, and songs with lyrics about Brisbane. Come along and soak up some of the essence of the city.

"One of the highlights of our recent Australian trips has been or collaboration with Topology. Rarely does one come across a group who can all write brilliantly and cross musical divides effortlessly. They are a refreshingly inventive and innovative team and it’s been a pleasure to work with them. Queensland is clever to look after them; what a base they have in the amazing Powerhouse and an unbeatable mentor in Andrew Ross." Paul Cassidy, Brodsky Quartet, collaborator.
