Christoph Eggner: Piano
Georg Eggner: Violin
Florian Eggner: Cello

Twenty years ago, in a tiny town in northern Austria notable only for housing the tomb of composer Anton Bruckner, a piano trio was formed. Its youngest member was just ten years old, and comprising three siblings, it was unlikely to survive a second winter.

The three brothers Eggner proved to be made of sterner stuff and the group continues to thrive in its adoptive home of Vienna. Violinist Georg says: “The focus of our trio has always been on the music, not on the fact that we are brothers. But it’s always there, and it’s good. We have the same language.”

The Australian connection began with three major prizes at the 2003 Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, followed by acclaimed national concert tours for Musica Viva in 2005 and 2008, with rapt responses from audiences of the inaugural Musica Viva Festival. This time the Eggners present intriguing programs that combine classics by Haydn and Beethoven with less common Romantic fare by Saint-Saëns and Dvorák, as well as the delightful Tales of Old Russia by Featured Composer, Ian Munro.

“Haydn was very progressive for his time,” says Georg. “And that could be said of both the Romantic trios, too. Sometimes they sound quite modern.” Pianist Christoph adds: “What we wanted to show with these programs is the big variety, but also the common things you can find in each piece, although they come from completely different worlds.”

Featured non-Australian music: Haydn, Saint-Saƫns
