Event Details
This concert by Emanuel Ax and musicians from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra features the Australian premiere of Brett Dean’s Hommage à Brahms, a work interspersed with Brahms’ Opus 119. Emanuel Ax, who is an avid supporter of contemporary composers, performed the world premiere in February at Chicago’s Symphony Center.
Brett Dean describes this work as “music that grows out of accompanying figurations yet takes on a life of its own, shining a light on Brahms’ poignantly melancholic Op.119 pieces.”
The concert will also showcase Schumann’s magisterial quintet, one of the richest of all chamber works for piano and strings, and will be performed at Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre on 24 June.
Featured non-Australian music: Brahms, Schumann
