Event Details

Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven: together, their string quartets have inspired and intimidated composers for centuries. This program sees Melbourne’s Flinders Quartet pairing Stuart Greenbaum’s sixth quartet (commissioned by Julian Burnside AO QC) with these three essential giants of the genre. Greenbaum cites Mozart in particular as having been a guiding force in his string quartet writing: ”...in the best works of Mozart, the elegance is genuine from the smallest harmonic sequence through to the larger architectural design. I’m also intrigued by Mozart’s melodic contours, whose notes loop back inside others like an interlocking pattern you might see in Escher.”

STUART GREENBAUM String Quartet No. 6 The Lonely Planet
MOZART String Quartet No. 14 in G major, K.387
HAYDN String Quartet Op. 33 No. 2 in E flat major (The Joke)
BEETHOVEN String Quartet No. 4, Op. 18, No. 4 in C minor
