Event Details
A program comprising some of the most beautiful and moving music written for soprano and string quartet (Greta Bradman and Flinders Quartet), Transcendent brings together works that have in common a deep and profound beauty and the use of poetry inspired by nature to depict elements of humanity.
The program begins with the music of Italian composer and violinist Ottorino Respighi, who used an Italian translation of Shelley's poem 'The Sunset' to portray the rising of a new day and new hope. Next comes John Tavener's Akhmatova Songs, set in the original Russian, depicting a pastiche of mountains, rivers and sunset against a backdrop of grief for a loved one lost. And then on, through Paul Stanhope's time-transcending and award-winning Sea Chronicles with Australian poetry, to 'Lua Descolorida' - a song inspired by Osvaldo Golijov's wish to create music "so quietly radiant that it would bring an echo of the single tear that Schubert brings without warning in his voicing of a C major chord."
Featured non-Australian music: Respighi, Tavener, Golijov
