How to Fail (Together): a compendium of challenges and strategies
Julia Kadel & Julian Day
What does it mean to live and work ‘successfully’ with others?
Berlin-based pianist Julia Kadel and Australian artist Julian Day premiere their bold new collaboration about negotiating everyday life and other people. Put simply - you can fail at succeeding, succeed at failing, and fail or succeed at being together.
How To Fail (Together) is a series of playful games and provocations, in which Kadel and Day attempt to thwart each other, inviting you to participate. Their different backgrounds – one a jazz pianist and improviser, the other a conceptual artist and composer – create a disorienting study in consensus and miscommunication that tests the boundaries of the traditional concert ritual. Only you can determine whether they succeed or fail.
Kadel is well known for her “Julia Kadel Trio” recordings, released through Major Label Universal Music/ Blue Note. In 2015 she and her trio were nominated for German Echo Jazz in two categories. She tours steadily through German and European festivals.
Day uses sound to reveal and critique social and spatial dynamics. He has presented work in museums and festivals worldwide including the California-Pacific Triennial at OCMA, Bang On A Can Marathon in New York and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, UK.
How To Fail (Together) is supported by the Australian Music Centre.
