Event Details

At the centre of all Indian music is the raga, derived from a Sanskrit word meaning‘the act of colouring or dyeing’ . It implies the capacity to change the mood or emotions. Metaphorically, then, a raga can convey ‘any feeling or passion... love, affection, sympathy, desire, interest, motivation, joy, or delight.’

After a recent visit to a desert fortress in western Rajasthan, Nigel Westlake created his rich postcard in a piece for three guitars. Similarly, after a visit to India in 1985, Peter Tahourdin found his music veering towards the ragas of North India. The Starlight Night, is based on the poem by the late 19th century Irish poet-priest Gerard Manley Hopkins. These pieces are followed by an improvisatory set by Peter Schaefer and Shen Flindell.
