Event Details

US-based Australian soprano Jane Sheldon has forged an international career that has been anything but traditional. Her latest project, the independently released CD North + South released in late 2012, tackled the ‘traditional’ but Jane and her collaborators the Acacia Quartet imbued it with a fresh new style.

North + South is an album of contemporary arrangements of songs – primarily traditional folk songs – from Australia, the United States, and the British Isles. It features arrangements by Britten, Berio, and Australian composers Andrew Ford, Martin Wesley-Smith, and Ann Carr-Boyd. Jane has also arranged some of the songs herself, including the Go-Between’s 1983 hit 'Cattle and Cane', which was declared by APRA one of the Top 30 Australian songs of all time. Some of the songs are well known, such as 'The Dying Stockman' and 'She Moved Through the Fair' but others are lesser-known gems.

Until now there has been no opportunity to give public performances of the new material, but Jane has just
returned to Sydney to give the first North + South public performances of these beautiful songs. The concerts will also include the music of Elena Kats-Chernin and Lyle Chan.
