Event Details

Jann Rutherford, the jazz pianist, composer, teacher and poet was a prominent and unique musical force in Australia and New Zealand (her home country). She moved to Sydney, a daring step for any young jazz musician, doing this alone and sightless was remarkable. Her music favoured exquisite delicacy, with her music often buoyant and infectious in its optimism. The 50th Anniversary of New Zealand pianist and composer Jann Rutherford is an important time to hear and reappraise her music. Having succumbed to cancer over ten years ago, Rutherford has become better known in recent times for the wonderful award named in her honour, which has helped a growing number of talented women in jazz to realise their potential and make their mark on the scene. For this special concert, the original members of Jann's quintet are joined by award winning pianist Matt McMahon to celebrate music with warmth, humour and unique colour. Winner of the Wangaratta Jazz Festival she led several bands including a trio with the leading bassist, Craig Scott and saxophonist Paul Cutlan.

Performers: Paul Cutlan (saxophone) Roger Manins (saxophone) Matt MacMahon (piano) Craig Scott (bass) David Goodman (drums)
