Event Details

Join us for our inaugural Jazz Insights program, as we hear from one of the most respected pianist/composers in the modern Australian jazz scene, Judy Bailey, who will reflect on her life and career in jazz. Following this talk will be a performance by her trio. Judy is a founding faculty member of the well-known and highly respected Tertiary Jazz Studies Program at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where she continues lecturing today. Judy has gained several prestigious awards, including the inaugural APRA Award for ‘Jazz Composition’, an Australian Entertainment Industry ‘MO’ for ‘Jazz Performance’ and in 2004 an OAM (Order of Australia Medal) awarded by the Australian Government for ‘Services to Music and Education’. In January 2008 Judy was chosen as one of ‘Sydney’s top 100 most influential people’ in The Sydney Morning Herald’s ‘the (Sydney) magazine’. That same year as part of the Australian Classical Music Awards (APRA and AMC), Belinda Webster (Tall Poppies Records) and Peter Rechniewski (SIMA) presented Judy with the Award for ‘Distinguished Services to Australian Music’ at the Sydney Opera House. Judy’s nomination was unique in that it was the first award ever granted to an outstanding jazz musician; finally identifying and acknowledging the music that creates a fusion of the classical and jazz genres. The trio setting especially gives listeners a great opportunity to appreciate Judy’s original compositions, wealth of musical ideas, wonderful sense of dynamics and beautiful sound.
