Event Details

Portraying the joyful contemplation of nature, Beethoven's famous Sixth Symphony, the 'Pastoral', was conceived as a companion piece to the tumultuous Fifth. Surprising novelties such as the evocation of a murmuring brook and birdsong in the slow movement prompt us to wonder whether Beethoven had a symbolic narrative in mind, and the 'Storm' movement startlingly disrupts the expected 4-movement plan of a symphony in Beethoven's time. While commentary about these pictorial elements has continued ever since the first performance, there is no mistaking the waves of joy that rise throughout the work and culminate in the finale.

The pastoral theme continues with a rare treasure, Vaughan Williams's Suite for Viola and Orchestra, which presents a charming portrayal of traditional English village life. A number of spellbinding miniatures, many of them dance-like in character, surround the Ballade, a more substantial movement that recalls the style of that very popular work by Vaughan Williams for solo violin and orchestra, The Lark Ascending. Performed by NSW Secondary Schools Concerto Competition Senior Award Winner in 2012 and 2013, Lisa Sung, who is currently studying at the Juilliard School, USA.

We are delighted to welcome back Sada Muramatsu to conduct this program, in which a thrilling contrast is provided by Carl Vine's terse and dynamic MicroSymphony. This is music of the city, with slick, glassy surfaces and energised by the rhythms of machines. Carl Vine AO is a distinguished Australian composer, educator and arts administrator, and the KPO looks forward to performing another of his finely crafted orchestral works.
