Event Details

The Leigh Barker Quartet is a very special Jazz Quartet. It will feature the jazz vocals and violin of Heather Stewart, pianist Tom Vincent (making a special trip up from Tasmania), Sam Young drums, and Leigh Barker double bass. Jazz vocalist Heather is one of the finest, with a swing and authenticity in the blues that is hard to match. Tom Vincent is one of the most daring improvisers in Jazz today. Leigh has toured the world with Tom's Trio, and in Australia with Jazz great Branford Marsalis. He has been nominated for the prestigious ‘Music Council of Australia Freedman Music Fellowship’. In 2011 his CD ‘The New Sheiks’ was also awarded the Australian Bell Award for ‘Best Traditional Jazz Album’. Heather Stewart has impressive credentials as a jazz musician. She is a multi-instrumentalist who is also dedicated to playing old style blues, jazz, cajun, folk, and originals. Her album won 2011 Vic/Tas Blues Society 'Debut Album' award and 'Female Artist of The Year', plus the 2010 MBAS 'Best Self Produced Album'. Leigh has toured with some other big jazz names, including American Tenor Saxophonist Ned Goold, who is the musical director of the Harry Connick Jr. Big Band, Chris Botti as part of the support act, the Sarah McKenzie Trio, and the Australian tour of the ‘Hot Jazz Alliance’ featuring American musicians Josh Duffee and Andy Schumm, world renowned experts in 1920’s Jazz. In 2006 Leigh also collaborated with Tom Vincent on the soundtrack for the hit ABC television program ‘The Collectors’. With this great collection of talented jazz musicians I am certain you will enjoy the night. Booking early would be a good idea. It will be a rare opportunity to hear Tom as his "mainland" visits do not happen often.
