For the past few years Mark Isaacs has been focussing on his Resurgence Band quintet project (a 505 regular) which has toured widely in Australia & Asia (including the 2009 Tokyo Jazz Festival), released the internationally-acclaimed CD Tell It Like It Is (ABC) and garnered ARIA and Bell Award nominations. But Mark has always loved playing in a jazz trio setting and returns to this format after quite a few years of absence for a special one-night only event at 505 with the rhythm section from the Resurgence Band (which is itself recording a new CD at the end of the month).
In 2005 Mark recorded the CD Visions (Vorticity) named after the Stevie Wonder tune of the same name. This reflects one of the areas he likes to use to source material in his trio projects, what could be called 'heritage melodies' whether they be pop tunes or standards. Another trio thing is blowing freely on groovy spontaneous vamps. Contrasting to the Resurgence Band which features Mark’s often intricate, through-composed and tightly-rehearsed compositions, here – as is ideal territory for a piano trio - the group and individual blowing on well-loved melodies already out there – or just starting from thin air - will be the feature.
Mark Isaacs – piano
Brett Hirst – bass
Tim Firth – drums
