Kats-Chernin Big Rhap
Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1
Stravinsky Petrushka
Bramwell Tovey conductor
Jorge Luis Prats pianist
Revised in 1947, Stravinsky’s extraordinary ballet burlesque, Petrushka captures the love triangle of one of Russia’s great folk characters Petrushka, and two other puppets, a Ballerina and a Moor.
Set in St. Petersburg’s historic Shrovetide Fair, this universally familiar story became one of the greatest productions of the Ballets Russes and is still much loved by audiences and musicians alike across the world today.
A new work from MSO’s 2017 Composer-in-Residence, Elena Kats-Chernin opens the concert before Tchaikovsky’s sublimely romantic Piano Concerto no. 1., takes you to a blissful, happy place, with its three movements full of Hungarian folk song jois de vivre and energetically vivid optimism.
Running time: 1 hour and 45 minutes, including a 20-minute interval
The MSO is delighted to welcome Elena Kats-Chernin, one of Australia’s leading composers, as its 2017 Composer in Residence.
Featured non-Australian music: Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky
