Event Details

Mujing is a collaborative work performed and conceived by Simon Barker, Bae il Dong, Phil Slater, Riley Lee, Matt McMahon, and Carl Dewhurst.

The work is a response to the term “Mujing” and its use in Chinese Penjing arts practice (Chinese bonsai) where two trees grow in close proximity and eventually merge into, what appears to be, a single tree.

The idea for the piece emerged in response to a tree nurtured by Sydney Penjing situ Philippe Tot which is a wonderful looking pair of trees. I felt that the idea of Mujing would be a lovely metaphor for the creation of a series of chant cycles performed by two musicians at a time.

During the 60-minute performance, conceived as a response to music associated with chant traditions found throughout Asia, the artists will perform in a variety of duo/trio combinations and as a full ensemble in order to create a series of chant cycles that link each musical episode and grouping of musicians.

Mujing features Phil Slater, Matt McMahon and Carl Dewhurst, Riley Lee, and vocalist Bae il Dong.
