Event Details
Orli Shaham is fine-tuning an inventive program of Brahms and Brahms-inspired piano music for her 2017 Sydney recital.
It pivots around Brahms's late piano pieces – intensely felt music full of character and personality. They might be miniatures but together they make a majestic final statement. And Shaham complements them with music directly and indirectly inspired by Brahms, including Brett Dean's Hommage à Brahms – three pieces designed to be played as interludes to Brahms's Op.119. Also in store is music Shaham commissioned from Israeli-American Avner Dorman: two intermezzos based partly on pieces from Opp. 118 and 119, and a third that is all Dorman's own. After Brahms, she says, is "ingenious, sensuous and powerful". Combining her passion for Brahms's music and a deep intellectual curiosity, Shaham thinks of this recital as if she were grouping works of art together in the same room, with old and new providing mutual illumination.
