This week we are absolutely thrilled and honoured to have one of Australia's most renowned, inventive and respected artists come to 505 for two very special gigs.
During the 1990's, Grabowsky made two albums on the Warner label which influenced a generation of Australian jazz musicians. In recent years, he bean to play the music from 'Tee-Vee' (1991) and 'Viva Viva' (1992) again after a almost twenty year hiatus.
He was reminded that this sound, of three horns and rhythm section, combines his love of composition with the freedom of expression which he feels to lie at the heart of the improvisatory moment. Several months ago, he sat down to write some new sextet tunes, and in a period of a few weeks, nine new compositions emerged.
They have the working title 'The Bitter Suite', and refer to the many influences which have shaped his music over the years, from the film noir scores of the 50's to reggae, from recent classical music to pop.
With James Greening, Andrew Robson, Jamie Oehlers, Cameron Undy and Simon Barker in this version of his sextet, he has a band of giants. Together they will explore the many landscapes of 'The Bitter Suite'.
