Event Details

What do you call a piece that only runs five minutes? Australian composer Carl Vine decided a short work deserved a short title and called it simply V (for the Roman numeral!).

‘I wanted to sing of the free, happy man, his mighty power, his chivalry and purity of spirit,’ said Prokofiev about his searching Fifth Symphony which overflows with persuasive charm. Yet it’s also witty, edgy and contrarian, with exquisite melodies. When Beethoven wrote his third Piano Concerto, he was breaking new grounds with his music; creating a new type of soundworld that had never been heard before. This concerto will show off the piano and orchestra to spectacular effect, especially in the hands of master pianist Paul Lewis.

Join us at 6.30pm in the Concert Hall for an insightful pre-concert talk. These pre-concert talks help to deepen your experience and create new pathways to enjoy the concert ahead. You can enter the pre-concert talk via Door 1.
